About Kayaşehir
Kayabaşı, better known for its housing projects, is a neighborhood in the Başakşehir district of Istanbul.
History
The neighborhood's former name, Ayayorgi (Greek: Ο Άγιος Γεώργιος - Azatlı), was formed in 1924 within the framework of the Treaty of Lausanne, from the Drama district of Thessaloniki province, Kovitsa, upon Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's statement "Go and settle there", referring to the places that the Greeks left during the exchange. There were people who migrated from the aforementioned Kovitsa village to Mahmut Şevket Paşa village, Turgutlu and Orhangazi. There are ruins of water wells and water channels left by the Greeks in Kayabaşı village. Geographically, it is a historical settlement area that took the name Kayabaşı in Turkish due to the rocky ground structure.
After 1985, its village status was abolished and it was transformed into a neighborhood. It has grown steadily since 2000, as construction has taken place within the scope of mass housing projects such as Bahçeşehir neighborhood. While rural settlement in Kayabaşı neighborhood has decreased, the rate of mass housing and luxury buildings has increased.
